To me, that does not sound right. It's becoming more and more common to have a completely legal installation of Windows without installation media such as CDs or DVDs. It is not an illegal copy and has been updating for months. My onekey recovery is also gone.
You can certainly reinstall Windows 7 from a retail disc. And if your machine meets the minimum requirements for Windows 8, you could install that instead.
